Runaway Kids Every 5 Minutes on UK Trains – Avanti West Coast Sounds Alarm This Christmas
Hidden Crisis: Kids Fleeing Home via Railways
Every five minutes, a child runs away from home in the UK, often hopping on trains to escape. To tackle this devastating issue, Avanti West Coast has teamed up with charity Railway Children to launch a gripping new film, Your Presence Is Presents Enough, aimed at urging passengers to stay alert and protect vulnerable youngsters this festive season.
- One child runs away every 5 minutes, many using trains as their escape route.
- The film exposes the harsh reality runaways face on the rail network.
- Created by BAFTA breakthrough director Daisy-May Hudson, drawing on her own experience with homelessness.
- Only 5 minutes long – reflecting how often children go missing.
“Everyone has a role to play in protecting vulnerable children,” said Natalie Richbell-Beer, Avanti’s Safeguarding and Crime Manager. “Our film helps train travellers spot warning signs and take action.”
How to Spot a Runaway: The AT RISK Guide
Research reveals a worrying festive gap: 34% of adults admit to being more distracted during Christmas, and 78% cannot confidently identify a runaway child. This leaves young runaways dangerously vulnerable amid crowded stations.
The campaign introduces Railway Children’s easy-to-remember acronym AT RISK to help passengers spot danger signs:
- Attitude
- Time of Day
- Relationship
- Instinct
- Safety
- Keeping a low profile
Passengers are urged to ditch their phones, stay vigilant and if a child seems at risk, alert station staff or text British Transport Police on 61016.
Campaign Boots Up at Stations and Online
Launched on Avanti West Coast’s YouTube channel, the campaign isn’t stopping there. Expect eye-catching announcements and posters at busy stations like Crewe and Stockport this Christmas. The aim? To keep the public clued-up and watchful during the festive madness.
Rob Capener, Chief Executive of Railway Children said: “If a child appears at risk, please speak up. Your vigilance can make all the difference.”
Director Daisy-May Hudson: A Personal Mission
“I’m proud of this film — it reminds us what really matters this Christmas: human connection and looking out for each other,” said Daisy-May Hudson. “Working with lived experience Ambassadors has been an honour. Film has the power to make us truly see one another, especially when hope and compassion are needed most.”
This Christmas, Avanti West Coast pleads with every traveller: eyes up, phones down, and be the lifeline vulnerable runaway kids desperately need.
