Man Arrested Over Boxing Day Stabbing in Hackney

A 38-year-old man, Jurejs Vankovs, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering 49-year-old Michael John Murphy. Murphy was found fatally stabbed on Cranwood Street, Hackney, in the early hours of Boxing Day, December 26, 2023.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest following a tragic stabbing near Old Street station in east London.

Deadly Fight Involving Ten People

Michael Murphy was attacked after a brawl involving around ten individuals. Despite emergency treatment at the scene, he died from his injuries.

Earlier, four other suspects — two men aged 49 and 42, and two aged 35 and 44 — were arrested but later released without charge.

Acquaintances Living Transient Lives in Shoreditch

Police revealed that Vankovs and Murphy knew each other and both led a “transient lifestyle” around the Shoreditch area.

“Our thoughts remain with Michael’s family at this very difficult time, especially given the Christmas period,” said Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, overseeing Hackney and Tower Hamlets policing. “We urge anyone who witnessed anything to come forward and help with the investigation.”

London’s Festive Season Marred by Stabbings

Murphy’s death adds to a grim surge in fatal stabbings across London during the festive season. Incidents struck on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.

One recent victim was 16-year-old schoolboy Harry Pitman, fatally stabbed on New Year’s Day near Primrose Hill during a fireworks event. Police arrested another 16-year-old on suspicion of murder in that case.

Harry’s killing marked the 17th teenage stabbing death in London in 2023.

Ongoing Investigation

The inquiry into Michael Murphy’s murder continues as police work urgently to deliver justice for his family.
