Whitechapel Hit-and-Run Horror: Brazilian Cyclist Killed

Detectives have named the victim of a fatal hit-and-run in Whitechapel as 36-year-old Matheus Piovesan, a Brazilian national. Police are urgently appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to help crack the case.

Deadly Crash at Cable Street and Cannon Street Road

The collision happened shortly after midnight on Saturday, 6 July, when a car smashed into Mr Piovesan near the junction of Cable Street and Cannon Street Road, E1. Emergency teams from the Metropolitan Police, London Ambulance Service, and London’s Air Ambulance raced to the scene.

Tragically, despite desperate medical efforts, Mr Piovesan was pronounced dead on site. His family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers during this heartbreaking time.

Driver Flees Scene: Manhunt Underway

The vehicle involved sped off without stopping, triggering a major investigation by the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU). Six people have been arrested amid the probe.

  • Three men aged 45, 24, and 23 face suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop. All three have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
  • Two women and one man arrested on similar suspicions have been released with no further action.

Police Urge Public to Speak Up

Detectives are desperate for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage from before or during the crash to come forward. Witnesses should call police on 101 quoting reference 230/06 July or contact the SCIU directly at 020 8285 1574.
