British Troops to Get High-Tech Rifle Upgrade Worth £90 Million
The British Army is gearing up with a serious firepower boost. Under a new £90 million contract, troops will receive cutting-edge, high-precision rifles designed to dominate the battlefield.
Meet the L403A1: Britain’s New Battle Rifle
The new weapon, dubbed the Alternative Individual Weapon (AIW) system, will be rolled out as part of Project HUNTER. Known officially as the L403A1, this assault rifle packs modern tech including a muzzle signature reduction system and an advanced optical sight. It’s designed to be deadlier, stealthier, and more reliable.
- State-of-the-art manufacturing for top reliability and accuracy
- Magnified optics for engaging targets at longer ranges
- Signature reduction system to hide visual and sound cues
The L403A1 will work alongside the current L85A3 rifles. The government awarded the contract to family-owned Edgar Brothers, helping to secure around 50 local jobs, supporting the Prime Minister’s economic pledges.
Stealth and Lethality: Next-Gen Battle Advantage
Defence Procurement Minister James Cartlidge praised the AIW for enhancing soldier protection and stealth. “Investing in cutting-edge battlefield tech is vital for protecting our troops and outclassing our enemies,” he said.
The first batch worth £15 million will deliver 1,620 rifles, with options to supply up to 10,000 over the next decade. These will initially equip the elite Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB), who operate in the toughest, high-threat environments.
Elite Units to Lead with the New Rifle
The Ranger Regiment, a key battalion within ASOB, will receive the L403A1 later this year. Already active in over 60 countries within their first year, the Rangers are central to the Future Soldier vision outlined in the 2021 Defence Command Paper.
Colonel Paul Cummings, from Defence Equipment & Support, hailed the teamwork behind Project HUNTER. “This weapon system is a game-changer, and we’re proud to deliver it fast,” he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Gareth Davies added, “The AIW brings a massive leap in lethality and features some of the best day and night sights available, ensuring our soldiers stay ahead.”
Modernising Britain’s Firepower
The L403A1 is a modern evolution of the ArmaLite Rifle platform, widely used by UK allies, making training and operations smoother in coalition missions. As Britain invests heavily in frontline gear, troop safety and operational effectiveness remain the Ministry of Defence’s top priorities.
