Beware! TV Subscription Scam Hits Thousands Across the UK

TV Fraudsters Dial Up the Pressure

The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has flagged a sharp rise in phone scams targeting TV subscribers. Con artists cold-call victims, pretending to be from a TV provider. They claim your subscription needs renewing or your equipment is outdated — all to hook you with a fake discount.

Scammers’ Tricks & Tactics

These fraudsters demand bank details to “process” the discount. Some even ask for ID like scanned passports. Beware calls from numbers such as 08447111444, 02035190197, and 08001514141. Reports say the scammers typically use a feminine voice with an Asian accent. Victims only realise they’ve been duped when their bank accounts show unauthorised transactions — and when they confirm with their real TV provider, who never made the call.

Who’s Most at Risk?

Since January 2018, over 300 Action Fraud reports reveal this scam is nationwide. The prime targets? The over-66s.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Don’t trust unsolicited calls or emails. Knowing your name or address doesn’t make them genuine. Scammers use trusted company names to fool you.
  • Stay calm — don’t be rushed. Real companies won’t pressure you into instant payments or decisions.
  • Keep control of your info. Never hand over bank or ID details on the call. Instead, hang up and contact your provider directly using official numbers on bills or statements.

Stay sharp and don’t let the TV scammers steal from you!
