Vandals Threaten to Rip Out Temporary Traffic Lights at Exceat Bridge
A recent wave of vandalism is putting the future of crucial temporary traffic lights at Exceat Bridge in serious jeopardy.
Lights Set Up to Tackle Coastal Congestion
Installed in March 2021, these temporary lights help ease traffic on the busy coastal route between Seaford and Eastbourne. They were put in place by East Sussex County Council while officials work on a permanent, two-lane bridge replacement.
Damage, Theft and Arson Ramp Up
But over the last few weeks, the lights have been plagued by theft and destruction. Batteries have been stolen from the traffic signals, and air gun pellets have smashed the equipment. On February 20, vandals set one of the lights on fire, hurled the other into a hedge, and dumped the traffic signs into the nearby Cuckmere River.
Council Warns Taxpayers Could Foot the Bill
Karl Taylor, assistant director of highways operations, expressed frustration:
“These lights have had a positive impact on the bottleneck at Exceat while we 1 on plans for a replacement, two-lane bridge. But, with the equipment consistently coming under attack, we may be forced to remove the lights altogether or use taxpayers’ money to employ security guards to protect them.”
Police Appeal for Information
The vandalism has been reported to 1, who are urging anyone with information to come forward. Just days ago, the fire service was called out to deal with one of the traffic lights engulfed in flames.
These attacks not only risk public safety but could scupper vital traffic improvements on a key coastal artery. Locals and motorists will be watching closely as authorities battle to keep the lights – and the traffic flowing.
