Fire Breaks Out in 10th Floor Lift Lobby Over Rubbish Pile
A small pile of rubbish in a 10th floor lift lobby went up in flames last night. Luckily, no one was hurt in the blaze.
Accidental Fire Linked to Careless Smoking
The London Fire Brigade believe the fire started accidentally, caused by unsafe disposal of smoking materials. A spokesperson warned of the dangers, especially as colder weather tempts more people to smoke indoors.
“It’s incredibly challenging to give up smoking but we have been backing #Stoptober as research proves if you quit for 28 days then you’re five times more likely to quit for good. Giving up smoking can not only prevent fires but the health benefits are countless,” said the Brigade spokesperson. “Discarding cigarettes without ensuring they’re completely out puts yourself and your family, friends and neighbours at risk. Quitting is a sure-fire way to reduce fire danger.”
Firefighters Race to Scene with Five Engines
The Brigade was called at 2.14am and brought the fire under control by 3.25am. Around 35 firefighters from Old Kent Road, Peckham, Dockhead, Lambeth, and Dowgate stations battled the blaze.
Smoking Safety Tips From Fire Experts
- Use sturdy ashtrays that won’t tip over and put cigarettes out properly.
- Never leave lit cigarettes or pipes unattended.
- It’s safer to smoke outside – but always fully extinguish and dispose of cigarettes safely.
- Don’t balance smoking materials on ashtrays’ edges as they can fall and cause fires.
- Be extra cautious when tired, on prescription drugs, or after drinking alcohol.
- Empty ashtrays carefully, ensure embers are cold, and wet them before binning – never use a wastepaper basket.
