Police and Bank Join Forces to Shut Down Fraudsters in Kent
Crime Fighters Hit Fraud at The Herne Centre
On Thursday 3 November 2022, Emma Swietochowski-Hay, Fraud Prevention Co-ordinator at Kent Police, teamed up with HSBC reps at The Herne Centre in St Martin’s View. Together, they handed out vital crime prevention tips to locals, warning them how to dodge scams and protect their cash.
Banks on the Frontline Against Scams
Bank staff are trained to spot dodgy activity and work closely with Kent Police right across the county. Through the UK-wide Banking Protocol, branch staff can flag suspicious transactions to police. This partnership often leads to on-the-spot police visits and even arrests.
Quick Thinking Stops Scammers in Their Tracks
Take October 6, when a Gillingham pensioner was nearly scammed out of a large sum of money. Alert bank staff stepped in, contacted police, and helped nab four fraud suspects. Similarly, on August 9 in Broadstairs, staff raised the alarm, protecting a vulnerable resident and leading to the arrest of three men.
Emma’s Warning: Stay Vigilant, Look Out for Vulnerable Neighbours
“Our partnership with banks has stopped many scams, especially those involving rogue traders pushing unnecessary home repairs,” said Emma. “Many don’t have internet access, so these events help spread crucial awareness. We urge everyone to check on neighbours and challenge anyone pressing for work or money they didn’t ask for.”
Lola Durodola, Local Director at HSBC, added: “It was great to have Emma from Kent Police join us for this vital community event. We’re proud to work together to provide financial safety tips and keep people’s money and wellbeing protected.”
