Historic Pub Famous for Illusions & Wonky Charm
The Crooked House, once owned by Marston’s, has been a West Midlands favourite for decades. Transformed into a pub in the 1940s by wolverhampton/" title="Wolverhampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Wolverhampton and Dudley Breweries, its unusual tilt was caused by 19th-century mining subsidence. Visitors flocked to see coins and marbles roll uphill along the bar, a mind-bending trick that brought the old pub its “wonkiest” title.
Sale, Fire & Heartbreak for Local Community
Just last month, Marston’s sold the pub to a private buyer aiming for “alternative use.” The timing makes the fire even more poignant. Staffordshire Fire and Rescue slammed into action with six fire crews battling the inferno through the night. Luckily, no one was inside and no injuries were reported. The area around High Arcal Road to Brick Kiln Lane remains cordoned off as police and fire authorities investigate the cause.
“Absolutely heartbreaking to lose such a cherished piece of our heritage,” said Jane Stevenson, Conservative MP for Wolverhampton Northeast. “I hope we see The Crooked House restored and its unique spirit alive again.”
