14 Arrested in Major South London Human Trafficking Raid
Five Nail Bars Raided Over Slavery Claims
Police swooped early in the morning on five nail bars across Southwark, south London, arresting 14 men and women on suspicion of human trafficking and modern slavery. The targeted spots included busy areas on Peckham High Street, Walworth Road, Camberwell Road, and Rye Lane.
Months of Investigation Lead to Bust
The huge crackdown followed a multi-agency probe launched in July 2019 after concerns were raised about vulnerable people being exploited in these salons. Led by the Central Specialist Crime Unit, the five-month investigation ended with search warrants serving surprise raids on the venues.
Victims Rescued, Suspects in Custody
Of those arrested, 13 face charges for modern slavery and human trafficking, while one is suspected of immigration offences. All remain in custody at south London police stations awaiting further action.
Meanwhile, 24 victims – 19 adults and five children – were found inside the shops. They were swiftly taken to a nearby reception centre for medical care and support, thanks to teams trained to assist trafficking victims.
Massive Operation Involving 150+ Officials
The operation saw over 150 personnel deployed, including 100 Metropolitan Police officers, immigration officials, Southwark Council reps, social workers, NHS staff, and charity workers dedicated to helping victims. Authorities also seized various items and a vehicle during the raids as the probe continues.
