Warning: Fraudsters Using Attorney General’s Office Phone Numbers to Scam the Public

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has alerted the public about a dangerous phone scam. Fraudsters are impersonating AGO and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), using official phone numbers—including the AGO’s public enquiry number 020 7271 2492—to swindle money from unsuspecting victims.

How the Scam Works

Scammers call victims, showing the AGO number on their caller ID. They falsely claim the call is from the AGO or HMRC, demanding payments to avoid criminal charges or settle supposed unpaid taxes. These calls are not from the actual AGO or HMRC.

AGO’s Clear Warning

The AGO will never call you asking for bank details or money over the phone. If you get a call like this, hang up immediately. Don’t get tricked.
