Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on Portsmouth’s Winston Churchill Avenue
Hampshire Police have launched a full investigation after a woman was fatally struck in Portsmouth’s Sommers Town area late Tuesday night.
Crime Scene and Road Closures in Place
Emergency services rushed to Winston Churchill Avenue at around 9.30pm on 3 August. Despite desperate efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both directions of the road are now closed between Victoria Road North and Isambard Brunel Road. A forensic team has sealed off the area, conducting a detailed examination to track down the hit-and-run driver.
Driver Flees Scene – Police Hunt Suspect
Witnesses say the vehicle involved sped off, leaving the victim “for dead.” Hampshire Constabulary’s Road Policing Collision Investigation Unit is leading the probe and will remain on-site for several hours searching for crucial evidence.
A police spokesman said:
“Officers are on scene dealing with a serious collision on Winston Churchill Avenue.
We were called at 9.32pm today, 3 August, to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.
A road closure is in place from Victoria Road North to Isambard Brunel Road and is likely to remain for some time. We advise members of the public to seek alternative routes.
We urge anyone who witnessed the collision to contact us on 101, quoting reference 2091 of today’s date.
We will update as soon as possible and thank the public for their patience.”
