Kent Police HQ Set for Triumphant Return to Sutton Road
After a major shake-up, Kent Police are moving their headquarters back to Sutton Road, Maidstone – the force’s historic home of 80 years. The HQ was closed in May 2020, with staff scattered across the county to boost community policing and make better use of facilities. But now, a policing boom is forcing a rethink.
From Closure to Comeback: Why the HQ Is Returning
The original HQ buildings and sprawling site were sold off in 2020 to raise funds amid uncertain market conditions and shifting workforce numbers. Yet since then, police numbers have surged thanks to the Home Office’s Police Uplift Programme and boosts from local funding.
This month, Kent Police have more officers on the beat than ever before in their history. The Chief Officer team and a slimmed-down HQ staff will move back to Sutton Road, marking a major operational shift.
Smart Moves to Save Cash and Boost Efficiency
- The current HQ space at North Kent Police Station will be repurposed for frontline policing or leased commercially.
- This frees up valuable resources and boosts savings beyond previous forecasts.
- The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, already based at Sutton Road, will stay put, allowing for seamless collaboration with the Chief Constable.
With potential new powers for PCCs on the horizon, the co-location could even open fresh revenue streams for the force.
Looking Ahead: Maximising Resources and Serving Communities
More details on the Sutton Road site and new development plans will be unveiled soon. Kent Police vow to maximise space and ensure officers are based where they are most needed. They remain committed to giving the people of Kent top-notch policing while saving taxpayers money.
“Our top priority is providing the best possible policing service in the right locations and at the lowest cost,” said a police spokesperson.
