Brave 12-Year-Old Josie-Leigh Wightman Wins Rising Above Adversity Award
Josie-Leigh Wightman, just 12, has faced more hardships than most adults. After a tough patch forced her and her brother to move in with a family member, Josie refused to give up. Instead, she stood tall, carrying on with life and looking after her loved ones.
Young Carer Keeps Strong Through Struggles
Despite the upheaval, Josie kept school and home life on track. She helped her brother with homework, packed lunches, and bedtime routines. Plus, she cared for their five cats – no mean feat for anyone, let alone a youngster.
“When I was staying with my family member we were still going to school, doing our homework, doing the packed lunches and I was helping my brother with his work and putting him to bed. I helped take care of our five cats too and made sure they were okay,” Josie said.
Support and Strength Shine Through
Talking to someone she trusted helped Josie keep her thoughts in check and deal with everything thrown at her. Her resilience and care for her family caught the eye of her carer, who praised her bravery and kindness.
“Some children might rebel when life gets tough, but Josie took it all in her stride. She cared for her brother and supported her family. Her selfless bravery is why she won this year’s Rising Above Adversity Award,” said her carer.
“For a 12-year-old to handle such a scary situation with such strength is truly inspiring. Everyone who knows Josie is proud beyond words.”
