A massive machete found hidden in a bush in Erith has been snatched up by police, stopping a potential threat in its tracks.

Machete Nabbed in Erith Bush

The Metropolitan Police swooped in on February 10 after getting a tip-off about the deadly weapon. Officers discovered a long-bladed knife with a striking black and orange handle, sheathed in black fabric.

A Met spokesperson said:

“Officers from Erith and MPS North Heath recovered this large machete-style knife after it was found in a bush. Another weapon off the streets, preventing its use in crime and making our neighbourhoods safer.”

Soaring Knife Crime in London

This find comes amid a spike in knife-related incidents plaguing the capital. The Ben Kinsella Trust reveals knife and sharp instrument offences have surged by 94% in the past decade, hitting 55,008 reported cases by September 2024.

Named after 16-year-old Ben Kinsella, who was brutally stabbed to death in 2008, the trust fights back by educating youths and raising awareness of the knife crime crisis sweeping the UK.

Police Probe Continues

It’s still a mystery how the machete ended up dumped in that Erith bush or if it had already been used in crime. The Met is urging locals to report any weapon sightings – anonymously if needed – to keep communities safe.
