Thieves Target ATM on London Road: Cash Stolen After Customer Left

Kent Police are hunting crooks who tampered with an ATM on London Road last Saturday, 8 July 2023. At around 10am, a customer tried to withdraw cash from the machine outside a local bank but got nothing.

The victim left thinking the machine was faulty – but suspects struck again soon after. Police believe the thieves returned to remove a hidden device that had trapped the cash inside.

How the Scam Works

Sergeant Nick Atkinson explained the likely method: “While we’re still investigating, in past cases, criminals have stuck devices over the cash slot using adhesive tape to steal money.”

He added, “If an ATM looks tampered with, report it immediately to your bank or the police. Always cover the PIN keypad when entering your number. If your card gets stuck or the machine keeps it, check for anything unusual and call your service provider straight away.”
