Five Trapped in Saint Margarets Bay Caves – Huge Rescue Underway
A major search and rescue mission is in full swing after five people were reported trapped in the complicated cave system at Saint Margarets Bay.
Massive Emergency Response Scrambled
The alarm was raised at around 6.15pm on Saturday, January 22, 2022. Coastguard teams from Folkestone, Deal, and Langdon, alongside Kent Police and a specialist rope rescue unit from Kent Fire and Rescue, were all dispatched to the scene.
The trapped group reportedly used the What3Words app to pinpoint their location, but it’s still unclear if anyone is injured.
Historical WWII Tunnel Poses Challenge
Rescuers are focused near Ness Point, just outside Dover. The area includes a brick-lined tunnel with a tin roof — once a WWII machine gun post guarding the beach from enemy landings. The tunnel itself has been sealed, complicating access.
The stranded individuals are believed to be stuck high up on the cliff face near the old gun post. Police on the beach are shining powerful torches, scanning the cliffs for any sign of the group.
Rope Rescue Plan Takes Shape
Coastguard sector managers and Kent Fire’s group managers are coordinating a rope rescue operation to reach those trapped high above the ground. The Maritime Operations Centre in Dover is overseeing the effort.
Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue have been approached for comment. Updates will follow as the rescue continues.
