Tragic Death as Man Crushed by Roller Shutter in Woking

A man has died after being crushed by a roller shutter while working at a commercial premises in Woking. Emergency services rushed to Commercial Way just after 9am following reports of a serious accident.

Emergency Services Swiftly Respond

Police quickly sealed off the scene, with Surrey Police and the Health and Safety Executive launching a joint investigation. Witnesses say the man, believed to be in his 50s, was working on the shutter when a loud crash was heard.

“I saw him working on the shutter and then heard a loud crash. Next thing I knew, the ambulance was outside the shop,” said a nearby worker.

Police, ambulance, and fire crews flooded the area. A tent was erected around the scene, indicating the grim reality. The man suffered head injuries, with blood visible on the pavement outside the shop.

Witnesses Describe Grim Scene

Another shop worker, who arrived shortly after the incident, described paramedics performing CPR. “They were working on him, but it just didn’t look good,” she said.

Police forensic teams combed the area, collecting screw samples and snapping countless photos as part of their investigation. Tools were scattered across the floor near the half-raised roller shutter still attached to the ceiling.

Road Closures and Ongoing Investigation

Surrey Police confirmed the road between Chertsey Road and Church Street East remains closed for several hours due to the investigation.

A police statement read: “We attended with other emergency services following a report of a man sustaining head injuries at a place of work. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Health and Safety Executive has been advised and enquiries are ongoing.”
