Milton Keynes Standoff Ends in Fatal Police Shooting
David Joyce, 38, was shot dead by police outside Milton Keynes railway station on Tuesday, April 1. Officers confronted the man after he reportedly charged at armed officers wielding a knife.
Knife-Wielding Man Shot After Threatening Officers
Thames Valley Police were called just before 1pm following reports of a man armed with a gun. At the station’s main entrance, officers found Joyce holding a knife, contrary to the initial report. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed Joyce then ran towards the officers, prompting a deadly response.
Single Close-Range Shot Killed Joyce
At 1.04pm, bodycam and CCTV footage show one officer firing a single shot at close range, striking Joyce in the abdomen. Despite immediate first aid, Joyce was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as a single gunshot wound. No other weapons were found. The police cordon was lifted the next day.
Independent Investigation Launched
The IOPC has opened a full inquiry into the shooting. Director Derrick Campbell said:
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of this man. We will independently investigate all circumstances, including police actions and decisions.”
He added:
“This incident outside a busy station will naturally cause concern. Our team is working hard to establish the facts and provide answers to the community.”
The IOPC has urged anyone who witnessed the event or has video footage to come forward.
Community Left Reeling as Debate Rages
Regular commuters and locals expressed shock and concern over the incident. One Milton Keynes resident said:
“It’s really unsettling to hear about something like this in such a public place. I hope the investigation brings some clarity.”
On social media, opinions are divided. Some questioned the use of lethal force, with one tweet reading:
“Police must protect the public, but a single shot to the abdomen sounds severe. Was there no other option?”
Others defended the officers, highlighting the danger posed by an armed suspect rushing at them.
Family Notified as Police Promise Transparency
David Joyce’s next of kin have been informed but have yet to comment publicly. The IOPC has pledged to keep the family updated during the investigation. Thames Valley Police have reiterated their commitment to transparency as the inquiry continues.
