Mass Chemical Spill Triggers Evacuation in West Thurrock

A major chemical leak at the ICL site in West Thurrock, Essex, has sparked a mass evacuation and lockdown on Monday, 6th January 2020. A huge chemical cloud was seen billowing above the industrial building, forcing emergency services to act fast.

Emergency Services Lock Down Area

Essex fire crews and police have cordoned off the scene, closing roads through the industrial estate after what they describe as a ‘large incident’. Witnesses reported seeing multiple fire engines, ambulances, police vehicles, and a specialist HAZMAT unit rushing to the site.

Essex County Fire and Rescue warned locals to avoid the area and urged residents to keep all doors and windows tightly shut. A 100-metre exclusion zone has been set up as a precaution.

Details From the Scene

The chemical spill took place on Oliver Road, near Stoneness Road, at around 4:20pm. Fire officials confirmed the incident was caused by a reaction involving an industrial cylinder, leading to a cloud of fumes containing hydrochloric acid.

Neil Fenwick, Area Manager at Essex Fire and Rescue, said: “A tank has failed, but the leak is contained within the site. Firefighters are safely managing the leak, and this will continue for some time.”

Six fire crews took over operations at 8:30pm to keep the situation under control. Road closures remain in place as emergency teams work to make the site safe.

Health and Safety Advice for Locals

  • Stay indoors with all windows and doors closed.
  • If travelling by car or lorry near the site, switch off air conditioning systems.
  • People with respiratory issues should have medication nearby and call 111 if feeling unwell.

Officials urge everyone to avoid the West Thurrock area until further notice as the clean-up and containment continue.
