Fake Minicab Driver Jailed for Targeting Drunk Passengers
A sham minicab driver has been slapped with 21 weeks behind bars after fleecing drunk customers. Shahen Chowdhury, 56, from Tower Hamlets, admitted to multiple theft and fraud charges.
Conman Snatches Bank Cards and PINs
The court heard Chowdhury tricked intoxicated passengers early this year by posing as a legitimate taxi driver. During the rides, he deceitfully obtained their bank cards and PINs. Before dropping them off, he swapped their cards with stolen ones, running up more fraudulent charges without victims noticing.
Investigation Uncovers Web of Fraud
His arrest came after a probe sparked by several complaints about unauthorised withdrawals linked to his minicab service. Chowdhury’s scams shattered passenger trust and broke strict taxi licensing laws that require proper ID and pre-booking procedures.
Stay Safe: How to Spot Legitimate Taxis
Passengers are urged to check for a valid licence plate or official disc on minicabs. Remember, licensed taxis can only be pre-booked. Spot a dodgy unlicensed cab? Report it immediately here.
“This sentencing is a clear warning to stay vigilant when using taxi services, especially after a few drinks,” said court officials.
