Met Police Smash International Phone Smuggling Ring in Record Crackdown

Huge Bust: 40,000 Stolen Phones Headed for China

The Metropolitan Police have hit a massive phone theft gang, uncovering a criminal network shipping up to 40,000 stolen mobiles from London to China – that’s nearly 40% of all London’s phone thefts.

Operation Echosteep, launched last December, began when officers found a crate of around 1,000 stolen iPhones near Heathrow, bound for Hong Kong. Detectives quickly zeroed in on the gang behind the haul.

After months of surveillance, cops arrested two men in north-east London with thousands of stolen phones in their car and homes. The scale of smuggling was staggering, exporting almost half of London’s pinched mobiles overseas.

From Street Gangs to International Smugglers – Police Targeted Them All

The crackdown didn’t stop there. A follow-up sweep saw 15 more arrests linked to street robberies and pickpocketing. Raids on 28 locations in London and Hertfordshire uncovered over 30 more stolen phones, effectively dismantling the entire ring from the streets to the smugglers.

Commander Andrew Featherstone, Met lead on phone theft: “This is the largest crackdown on mobile phone theft in UK history. We’ve smashed networks from street criminals to international gangs. Londoners deserve safety, and this operation shows our commitment to cutting crime.”

“We’re calling on manufacturers like Apple and Samsung to help protect their customers with better security measures.”

High-End iPhones Fuel Ruthless Crime Empire

Detective Inspector Mark Gavin revealed the gang targeted pricey Apple products specifically because they sell for top dollar overseas – up to $5,000 per handset in China. Street thieves got paid up to £300 per stolen phone.

“Behind every phone is a victim,” Gavin said. “People lose precious photos and sometimes suffer violent robberies. This group turned stolen phones into industrial-scale profits.”

Crackdown Cuts London Phone Thefts and Robberies

The Met’s operation has paid off – personal robberies are down 13% and thefts by 14% this year. Mayor Sadiq Khan hailed the work:

“I’ve seen how the Met is tackling both street thieves and international smuggling gangs. This crackdown led to hundreds of arrests and thousands of phones seized, helping cut crime in the city.”

Khan urged phone makers to “go harder and faster” on tech that renders stolen devices useless, stressing the need for global cooperation.

Latest Police Actions Against Phone Theft Gangs

  • Eleven arrested in a special operation targeting gangs robbing courier vans delivering the new iPhone 17, using cutting-edge tracking tech.
  • Two men held on suspicion of money laundering and handling stolen goods after police found £40,000 cash and stolen devices at a phone shop in Islington.
  • A man caught at Heathrow with 10 stolen phones, iPads, laptops, and Rolex watches, linked to 200 trips between London and Algeria over two years, was charged with handling stolen goods.

Crime Minister Sarah Jones said: “This massive operation sends a clear message to all phone thieves and organised crime gangs – we’re coming for you. We’re boosting police powers and presence to keep London’s streets safe.”

The Met’s record-breaking crackdown shows phone crime is finally being tackled head-on. But with criminals still cashing in millions, cops need the phone industry to step up security and help end mobile phone crime for good.
