Glasgow Mum’s Heartbreaking Plea on Murdered Son’s Birthday
Glasgow’s Barlanark community was stunned on July 24, 2019, when Rhys Bonner, a beloved Celtic fan, vanished without a trace. Despite desperate searches, horror struck on August 8, 2019, when Rhys’s partially clothed body was found in Seven Lochs Wetland Park. Suspicion of foul play has haunted the community — especially his mother, Stephanie Bonner, who remains desperate for answers.
‘Happy Heavenly 24th Birthday’ – A Mother’s Shattered Heart
On what would have been Rhys’s 24th birthday, Stephanie posted a raw and emotional tribute, vowing to keep fighting for justice. She wrote:
“Happy heavenly 24th birthday to my handsome firstborn. Can’t believe this is your 5th birthday without me, your mum and family.
The heartbreak from the day you were taken never fades. I died that day too, son. Nothing will ever be the same.
I still wait for you to come home. You are my life and always will be, my firstborn, my world. Every breath I take is a struggle without you.
You loved the simple things — your birthday cake, family movie nights, picnics. I’m lost without you, missing your touch, your voice saying ‘mum’.”
She promised: “I will die fighting for you, son. We will never stop until we get #JUSTICEFORRHYS.”
Questions Surrounding Rhys’s Death Stir Anger
Stephanie suspects Rhys’s death wasn’t accidental. She believes critical information has been withheld, including the identity of a “tomboyish” woman, aged 45 or older, seen on CCTV walking alongside Rhys shortly before he disappeared. Their route through Conisborough Road is a pivotal lead.
Frustrated by what she calls a “corrupt” and lacklustre investigation, Stephanie accuses Police Scotland of a cover-up. But Chief Inspector Patrick Murphy said in 2020 the inquiry found no criminal evidence, with the case now with the Crown and Procurator Fiscal Service.
Campaign Gains Attention, Family Demands Justice
In 2023, the Scottish Government’s Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee took notice after Stephanie’s emotional testimony. They promised to press Police Scotland on her calls for better support for families hit by unexplained deaths.
Stephanie demands faster evidence collection, timely toxicology results, regular family updates, and improved communication from authorities during missing persons cases.
The quest for truth and justice rages on. Stephanie refuses to let Rhys’s memory fade. Her fight has become a rallying cry across Glasgow — a call to finally bring peace to a grieving family and hold those responsible to account.
