NHS Staff Hailed Heroes After Isle of Wight Crash Major Incident
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has lauded its staff for their outstanding professionalism during a major incident sparked by a horrific crash on Forest Road, Newport.
Crash Causes Chaos: Two Cars and Bus Collide
A severe collision between two cars and a bus left multiple casualties, with many seriously injured. The NHS Trust swiftly declared a Major Incident to manage the surge of patients flooding into the hospital.
Rapid Response Saves Lives
The declaration triggered extra staff from across the Trust to rush in and care for the influx of casualties alongside existing patients. Community outreach workers from Isle of Wight Council were called in to assist on hospital wards, freeing nurses and doctors to focus on emergency care.
Grim Toll and Praise for Frontline Heroes
Maggie Oldham, Chief Executive of Isle of Wight NHS Trust, expressed her sorrow and gratitude:
“Our thoughts go out to everyone involved in yesterday’s tragedy, especially the family and friends of the person who sadly lost their life. I am extremely thankful and proud of all our staff for their superb professionalism and care. Everyone rallied together, whether on duty or not.”
Emergency services acted swiftly: eight ambulances and four air ambulances attended the scene, supported by specialist clinicians, fire crews, and police. Sadly, one person was pronounced dead at the scene despite best efforts.
Patients Rushed to Hospitals Across Region
- Eighteen patients required triage, treatment, and transport.

- Sixteen were taken to St Mary’s Emergency Department, with one transferred further to Brighton Hospital’s major trauma centre.
- One patient required hospital admission.
