Tributes roll out for beloved London paramedic Mark Pell in heartfelt funeral convoy
Motorcycle crew leads emotional farewell
Mark Pell, a cherished paramedic with London Ambulance Service’s Motorcycle Response Unit, was honoured with a powerful funeral procession on Tuesday 17 May. Around 29 of his colleagues rode alongside the hearse, escorting Mark and his family on his final journey.
Mark died on 13 April following a serious road accident during a training course in North Wales. He was just 51 years old.
28 years of service remembered
Joining the Service in August 1994, Mark spent nearly three decades saving lives. His career took him through Whipps Cross and Buckhurst Hill ambulance stations before he became a key figure in the Motorcycle Response Unit. Known for his dedication and kindness, Mark was a beloved member of the ‘green family’—a sentiment echoed by all who gathered on Tuesday.
Tributes from NHS and colleagues
The procession covered 25 miles from Chipping Ongar to Ilford, joined by a police escort, an ambulance, and a fast response car. As the convoy passed Whipps Cross Hospital, NHS staff lined the route to pay silent tribute, holding a one-minute silence in Mark’s memory. The funeral concluded with a guard of honour and trumpet salute at the crematorium, underscoring the respect Mark earned throughout his career.
Chief Executive Daniel Elkeles said: “Mark is greatly missed by his colleagues at London Ambulance Service. He was an asset and a popular member of our team, known for his dedication to patients and support for his colleagues. We thank Mark’s family for allowing us to join this fitting tribute with one last ride out. Our thoughts remain with all who knew him.”
Director of Ambulance Services Darren Farmer added: “Today’s turnout shows how much Mark was loved. Many more couldn’t attend but worked hard to keep services running smoothly. We thank everyone who made today’s farewell so touching. Please continue to respect Mark’s family’s privacy.”
