Brutal Courier Fraud Scammers Swipe £72,900 from Nottinghamshire Pensioners

Heartless crooks are targeting elderly victims with a slick scam, tricking them into handing over thousands in cash for a fake police “undercover bank investigation.”

How the Scam Works

  • Fraudsters pose as police officers. They tell victims their bank is linked to counterfeit notes.
  • Victims are told to withdraw cash and hand it over to a “courier” for inspection, promising they’ll be reimbursed.
  • The “courier” is actually a thief who vanishes with the money.

Nottinghamshire Police recorded 34 courier fraud attempts in just two weeks in January. Six victims lost a staggering total of £72,900.

Targeted Pensioners Warned After Huge Losses

Retired Steve Westby from Radcliffe-on-Trent narrowly escaped the con but admits the scam is dangerously convincing.

“When you think it’s a police officer on the phone, you immediately trust them. It’s an ingenious ruse. I can see why so many people are duped by it,” said Steve.

One elderly couple in their 80s were hit hardest, losing £24,000 after a caller claiming to be from BT shifted the conversation to a fake detective sergeant.

Police Urge Vigilance to Stop Scammers

Detective Inspector Ashley Xavier of Nottinghamshire Police vows to track down the fraudsters and support victims in recovering their money.

“These con artists are convincing and cruel. We urge the public to warn friends and family. No real police officer or bank will ever ask you to hand over cash or reveal PINs over the phone.”

Fraud Protection Officer Dale Richardson added:

“If you know anyone vulnerable, share this warning. Always hang up and call police directly using official numbers if in doubt.”

Police warn a fake callback number “191” often leads victims straight back to scammers, so it’s vital to use known, genuine contacts.
