Early Morning Horror on A13: Woman Dies After Wrong-Way Van Crash
A deadly smash unfolded at around 2.35am on Friday, 25 November, when a van barreled the wrong way down the Essex-bound A13 and slammed into a black Toyota Prius.
Van Fleeing Police Before Fatal Collision
The 39-year-old van driver ignored Essex Police orders to stop before entering the A13. The crash claimed the life of a 21-year-old female passenger in the Prius, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Her grieving next of kin have been informed.
The van driver was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police and causing death by dangerous driving. Meanwhile, the Prius driver was also taken to hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.
Police Launch Full Investigation
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is probing the incident, including the actions of Essex Police officers prior to the crash.
Detective Sergeant Mike Rapp said: “This is a terrible incident that has resulted in the tragic death of a young woman. I am appealing for anyone driving on the A13 near Dagenham shortly after 02:30 who saw the van driving the wrong way to come forward.”
He added: “We’re aware of footage circulating on social media. I ask anyone with images or video to consider the family’s feelings before sharing, and to please share any material with the police to help build a clear picture of what happened.”
