Pensioner Scammed Out of £170,000 in Shocking Crypto Romance Fraud

A woman in her 70s from Nottinghamshire was conned out of a staggering £170,000 in a twisted crypto romance scam. The crook posed as a US Army surgeon, fooling her into an 18-month online relationship before draining her savings.

Police and Ombudsman Step In – But £60K Lost for Good

After months of stress and worry, Nottinghamshire Police’s Fraud Protect team helped the pensioner secure £110,000 compensation from her bank. The financial ombudsman ruled it was a high-level scam, linked to organised crime gangs operating out of Nigeria. Sadly, the woman was still left £60,000 out of pocket and emotionally shattered.

Warning from Police: Spot the Signs of Romance Scams

“Romance fraud is a particularly callous crime that targets the most vulnerable,” said Fraud Protect officer Dale Richardson. “The victim was exploited through fake stories over 18 months and lost a life-changing sum.”

“We urge anyone facing a similar situation to contact police immediately – you won’t be judged, and help is available.”
