Newborn Baby Found Dead Near Charles Dickens’ Birthplace in Portsmouth
Police are investigating the tragic discovery of a newborn baby at the junction of Victoria Street and Old Commercial Road, Portsmouth, near the famous birthplace of Charles Dickens. Officers were called to the scene at 6.18am this morning and are conducting house-to-house enquiries.
Appeal for Mother’s Welfare
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Baker urged the baby’s mother to come forward. He said: “We are extremely concerned for the welfare of the mother of this child. I am making a direct appeal to her to get in touch with us. I know this must be a very distressing time, but it’s important you receive the right support and care.”
He added: “We understand you may be frightened, but please reach out. We want to speak to anyone worried about someone recently heavily pregnant or who has just given birth. If you’re concerned about the whereabouts of a newborn baby, contact us in complete confidence.”
Increased Police Presence in the Area
Officers are stepping up patrols and carrying out door-to-door checks in the Old Commercial Road vicinity today. The investigation is still in its early stages, and the scene remains cordoned off as detectives gather evidence.
