No Isle of Wight Pride in 2019: Event Cancelled But Future Looks Bright

Pride Event Cancelled After Organiser Exodus

The Isle of Wight Pride is off the calendar for 2019. Organisers confirmed the annual event won’t happen this year after key committee members quit, sparking a volunteer crisis.

A packed public meeting at Newport’s Riverside Centre on Saturday tried to save the day. Many stepped up to volunteer, but it wasn’t enough to pull off the event. The tough decision was made to cancel 2019’s Pride.

Looking Ahead: Big Plans for 2020 and Beyond

Instead, focus is shifting to a long-term plan. Organisers want to build a sustainable, community-driven Pride event starting in 2020, with ambitious five-year goals to make Pride a permanent Island fixture.

“Whilst there is sadness in a focal Pride event not taking place in 2019, Pride is not about just one day,” organisers said. “There will still be community events, school training, and support for the Island’s LGBT+ community.”

New Trustees, New Energy

The meeting welcomed more trustees to the Pride charity, brightening hopes for the future. Plans for a 2020 Pride March and event are already in motion, timed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Gay Liberation Front.

Volunteers Still Needed

Pride organisers urge locals to volunteer for smaller community events throughout 2019. They’re eager to build momentum and deliver an Isle of Wight Pride that the Island can be truly proud of.
