Dumfries Detectives Warn of Nasty Phone Scams Targeting Locals
Detectives in Dumfries are ringing alarm bells after a spike in ruthless financial scams. Crooks are targeting residents, pretending to be police officers investigating bank fraud.
Fake Cops Ask Victims for Cash Withdrawals
The scammers cold-call victims, claiming they need help cracking a fraud case at their bank. They then twist arms to get them to withdraw large sums of money, promising a courier will pick up the cash. Thankfully, so far no one has fallen for it.
Police Issue Stark Warning: Don’t Hand Over Your Savings
“The people who carry out these crimes are despicable. They target the most vulnerable members of our community and try to steal their life savings,” said Detective Inspector Graeme Robertson.
He confirmed that real police would never contact individuals to ask for cash transfers. He urged everyone to stay sharp and warn elderly or vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours about these cunning scams.
How to Spot a Scam and Protect Yourself
- Hang up suspicious calls immediately
- Wait a few minutes, then ring your bank directly using the number on your card or official paperwork
- Make sure the phone line is clear and audible – use a mobile if possible
- Never share personal info or withdraw money under pressure
Detective Robertson stressed that real callers will understand your caution. Don’t let fraudsters steamroll you – keep your cash and secure your info.
