Leicestershire Police Warn of Scammers Posing as Officers

Police are sounding the alarm after two scam calls hit Leicestershire on Thursday. In both cases, scammers pretended to be police officers and demanded victims withdraw or transfer cash. Thankfully, no money was lost, but the warnings are clear: stay alert and stay safe.

Don’t Take the Bait: Police Will Never Ask for Cash

Nicole McIntyre from the Leicestershire Economic Crime Unit urged the public to be on their guard. “Scammers often target elderly or vulnerable folks, using fast talk to trick them,” she said. “Remember, the police will never call and ask you to hand over money. If you get such a call, just hang up.”

Stay One Step Ahead: Safety Tips After a Scam Call

  • Don’t trust caller ID—scammers can fake numbers.
  • Never give personal info or bank details to unknown callers.
  • If in doubt, call your bank back using a known number; scammers can stay on the line after you hang up.
  • Warn family, especially elderly relatives, about these frauds.
