Protesters Scale DEFRA HQ Over Bird Flu Crisis
Two animal rights activists made a dramatic climb up the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) building in central London. Dressed in hazmat suits, they scaled the outer wall before unfurling a banner demanding an end to intensive animal farming. Their message? Farming practices fuel pandemics and cause huge animal suffering.
Activists Blast Government Inaction
Hope Wetherall, a campaigner with the Animal Justice Project, slammed the Government’s response. “Activists today are braving the elements and dizzying heights to highlight our government’s inaction on the urgent and catastrophic outbreak of bird flu rampaging through intensive chicken sheds,” she said.
“Modern agriculture causes immense suffering to animals and poses serious risks to humans. Yet politicians only respond with culls and ‘prevention zones’—band-aid solutions that ignore the root cause.
It’s critical that DEFRA acts now with meaningful, proactive measures.”
Police Called as Protest Unfolds
The Met Police arrived shortly before 6.30 a.m. after being tipped off about the climbers on Marsham Street’s Government building. Specialized units were deployed, but no arrests were made as the protest continued.
