Activists Scale DEFRA HQ in Daring Bird Flu Protest
Two animal rights campaigners from the Animal Justice Project stormed the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) building in central London. Dressed in hazmat suits, they clambered up the wall and dropped a huge banner condemning intensive farming and its link to the devastating bird flu outbreak.
Banner Blast: “End Animal Agriculture Now”
The activists called out the government for ignoring the crisis tearing through chicken sheds across the country. Hope Wetherall, an Animal Justice Project campaigner, said:
“Activists today are braving the elements and dizzying heights to highlight our government’s inaction on the urgent and catastrophic outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through intensive chicken sheds at lightning speed, as well as other animal agriculture-causing diseases.”
“Modern agriculture causes both immense suffering to animals and poses a very real risk to humans. Yet, our politicians only respond with declaring avian influenza zones and mass culling — measures that fail to address the root cause.”
“It is critical that government agencies such as DEFRA take proactive and meaningful action right away.”
Police Rush To Scene as Protest Unfolds
The Met Police were called just before 6.30am after receiving reports of two protesters scaling the Marsham Street government building. Specialized units were deployed to handle the situation. So far, no arrests have been made as the incident remains ongoing.
The dramatic protest shines a spotlight on the urgent need for government action against the bird flu crisis and the dangers of intensive animal farming.
