Beware! Rogue Traders Impersonating Island Roads Staff Target Isle of Wight Residents

Isle of Wight locals are being warned to stay alert after a surge in reports of cold callers pretending to be from Island Roads. These rogue traders are offering dodgy home improvements, roof cleaning, and driveway makeovers – all at suspicious prices.

Fake Traders on the Prowl

The Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards and Hampshire Police have teamed up to shout out a serious warning. Amanda Gregory, the Council’s regulatory and community safety services manager, said:

“Island residents should always be very wary of rogue traders who will cold call, as in our experience they are often unqualified conmen who will overcharge for unnecessary repairs and services which will be of poor quality.”

These fraudsters often push services like gardening, house maintenance, driveway work, and even roof steam cleaning. The advice? Never pay upfront to cold callers and always get at least two written quotes before hiring anyone.

Island Roads Speak Out

Stephen Ashman, deputy service director at Island Roads, makes it clear:

“Island Roads does not doorstep sell.”

He added that all materials used on Island roads are carefully tracked and strictly used for official projects. If anyone claims to be from Island Roads and you’re suspicious, call their helpline immediately on 822440. Alternatively, contact Trading Standards on 823371.

Look Out for Neighbours & Stay Safe

Trading Standards runs a trader approval scheme, vetting local tradespeople to protect consumers. To find approved traders, ring 823000 or visit www.iwight.com/tas.

If you spot any suspicious activity, especially around elderly or vulnerable neighbours, report it straight away to the police or Trading Standards.
