Royal British Legion Ditches Plastic for New Eco Poppy
Plastic-Free Poppy for Poppy Appeal
The Royal British Legion (RBL) has launched its first new poppy design in 28 years – and it’s plastic-free. Made from bespoke red and green paper, half of the materials come from recycled coffee cup waste. This huge eco step slashes the poppy’s carbon footprint by 40%, according to University College London experts who helped assess its green credentials.
Iconic Look, Green Future
The new poppy keeps the classic design and leaf shape but pushes the RBL’s commitment to sustainability front and centre. Andy Taylor-White, Director of the Poppy Appeal, proudly said, “This plastic-free poppy will not only allow people to support our Armed Forces community but also showcases the RBL’s drive to cut plastic use.” The switch to eco-friendly materials took years to perfect.
How to Wear and Recycle
- The new poppy can be pinned on, popped in a buttonhole, or worn as a stick-on.
- It will be sold alongside existing plastic poppies to cut waste.
- Plastic poppies can be returned to Sainsbury’s stores for recycling after the appeal ends.
A Greener Symbol of Remembrance
This new plastic-free poppy ensures that the national symbol of remembrance remains sacred while being kinder to the planet. The RBL’s bold move highlights that honouring our Armed Forces and protecting the environment can go hand in hand.
