Second Man Held Over Cruise Ship Death in UK Waters

Police have arrested a second suspect in the shocking death of James Messham, who died following a violent altercation onboard the MSC Virtuosa while the ship was sailing in British waters.

The new suspect, a 56-year-old from Richmond, London, was taken into custody on suspicion of manslaughter, police confirmed on Saturday, May 11.

The MSC Virtuosa set sail from Southampton at around 6pm on Saturday, May 3, heading for Belgium. The fatal fight happened that very evening while still within UK jurisdiction.

James Messham, 56, from Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, is believed to have died from injuries he sustained in the onboard clash.

First Arrest Made; Bail Granted

A 57-year-old man from Exeter was initially arrested on suspicion of murder after the ship docked. He has since been released on bail as the investigation presses on.

“We remain keen to hear from anyone who was aboard the ship, which departed Southampton around 6pm on Saturday and was still in British waters at the time,” said a police spokesperson.
