Massive Fire Mobilises 50 Firefighters
A massive grass fire erupted on Oaks Lane in Newbury Park, drawing a swift response from seven fire engines and around 50 firefighters. The blaze ripped through approximately 15 hectares of dry farmland, causing severe damage.
Evacuations and Animal Rescue
The Metropolitan Police quickly evacuated several properties along Oaks Lane. Five horses were safely led away from the flames. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the dramatic incident.
Warning Over Dry Conditions and Careless Sparks
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned, “The recent warm weather has left the ground bone dry, making grassland, parks, and woodlands tinderboxes.” They urged the public to avoid barbecues in parks, dispose of cigarettes responsibly, and clear rubbish and glass that can magnify the sun’s rays and ignite fires.
Quick Response Quells Fire in Just Over Two Hours
The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers handled 37 calls regarding the fire. The emergency call came in at 4.32pm, and the fire was fully extinguished by 6.54pm. Crews from Barking, Dagenham, Ilford, Romford, and surrounding stations worked together to contain the blaze swiftly.
