Tragedy on Isle of Wight: Prison Officer Dies After Christmas Eve Assault
Prison officer Nick Medlin, based at HMP Isle of Wight’s Parkhurst Site, was brutally attacked while celebrating with family in Ventnor late on Christmas Eve. Despite efforts, Nick never regained consciousness.
Beloved Officer Taken Far Too Soon
Nick, 55, had recently moved to the Isle of Wight with his partner Dani, leaving their sons Joe and Charlie on the mainland for their studies. Having joined the Prison Service just a few years ago, Nick quickly won the hearts of colleagues and prisoners alike with his professionalism and warmth.
“Nick was one of the best officers I’ve ever worked with in over 30 years,” said a close colleague. “He had a natural way with people and never had to demand respect – it was simply given.”
From Boss to Bonus
Before prison life, Nick ran his own company and brought invaluable people skills to his new role. He stood out for his permanent smile, quick wit, and the trusty cups of tea and coffee he shared with teammates.
Nick’s mentor recalled: “He knew how to handle any situation, even if he sometimes found himself in the wrong place during incidents – something we never let him forget in good humour.”
Heartfelt Tributes Pour In
This heartbreaking loss leaves a massive void among prison staff and family. “Nick was genuinely one of the loveliest people and friends I’ve had the pleasure to work alongside,” said a close friend.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Dani, Joe, and Charlie. Rest in peace, Nick – you were a true superstar and will be sorely missed by all who knew you.
