14-Year-Old Busted for Drug-Driving After Stolen Car Chase

New Basford, Essex – Police caught a 14-year-old boy behind the wheel of a stolen car during a high-speed chase on Sunday, January 7. The drama started when a blue Hyundai i20 was reported stolen from Ekowe Street at around 3pm after the owner accidentally left the keys in the door.

Police Chase Ends with Stinger Stop

Essex Police acted fast. Just 40 minutes after the theft, officers spotted the stolen Hyundai heading towards Kimberley. A brief pursuit unfolded along the A610 eastbound near the M1, ending when police used a stinger device to safely stop the vehicle.

Inside the car were four masked teenage boys. Despite attempts to escape, all were quickly arrested. Three were later released with no charges.

Driver Tests Positive for Cannabis – Faces Multiple Charges

The 14-year-old driver wasn’t so lucky. A roadside drug test showed cannabis in his system. He was arrested on suspicion of multiple offences including:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Drug driving
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failing to stop
  • Driving without a licence
  • Driving without insurance

The boy has since been released on bail, awaiting blood test results.

Police Warn of Dangers of Drug Driving by Minors

PC Dan Bird of Nottinghamshire Police slammed the reckless stunt, saying: “This was an opportunistic theft of a vehicle, and the consequences could have been catastrophic.” He urges anyone who witnessed the theft to come forward by calling 101 with incident number 385 of 7 January, or report anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555111.
