Police Crackdown Launches in Road Safety Blitz
Thames Valley Police and Hampshire Constabulary are joining forces with the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) to blast out a vital road safety message this week.
The campaign, dubbed One Road, One Week, is running from 14-18 September. Officers will be hitting the streets hard, cracking down on dangerous driving and spreading the word to keep roads safe.
Targeting the Deadly ‘Fatal Four’
Police patrols will focus on the notorious ‘fatal four’ road killers:
- Speeding
- Using mobile phones behind the wheel
- Not wearing seatbelts
- Drink and drug-driving
These reckless behaviours hugely increase the chance of fatal or serious crashes. The Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit is committed to stamping out these dangers.
Project EDWARD Takes Virtual Road Trip
The NPCC is also teaming up with Project EDWARD — Every Day Without A Road Death — a national police-backed initiative focused on work drivers and road users alike.
Project EDWARD is running a virtual road trip this week, featuring daily talks with road safety experts and organisations. It shines a spotlight on safe driving habits and injury prevention. More info is available on their website.
Police Warn: Even Small Risks Can Kill
“It is vitally important that everyone using the roads does so safely,” said Road Safety Sergeant Scott Kerr from the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit.
“Though road deaths have dipped slightly, far too many lives are still lost or shattered every year.
“Simple changes can make you a safer driver — like regularly checking your tyres, or silencing your phone by putting it in the glove box.
“Officers still catch people driving without licences, insurance or tax, plus many who are drink or drug-driving. Even tiny amounts can wreck your ability to drive, and ruin lives.
“This campaign aims to educate everyone — drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians — to play their part in safer roads.”
