Blaze Breaks Out on Sixth Floor Flat in Lewisham

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters raced to a flat fire on Russett Way, Lewisham in the early hours. Flames ripped through a communal area on the sixth floor, but thankfully, no one was hurt.

Dramatic Rescue from Scaffolding

Station Commander Richard Hamilton revealed the fire started in an outdoor communal space by the sixth-floor lobby. Firefighters heroically rescued a man and a woman trapped on scaffolding using a 9-metre ladder.

About 60 residents evacuated before the fire crews arrived, while others stayed safely inside unaffected flats. Authorities swiftly shut Lewisham Road between Morden Hill and John Penn Street to tackle the blaze.

Rapid Response and Ongoing Investigation

  • The fire brigade received 16 emergency calls.
  • Called at 1:53am, the fire was under control by 2:50am.
  • Firefighters from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, Lee Green, New Cross and nearby stations joined the fight.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service.
