Met Police Donation Blitz Nets 300 Laptops for Lockdown Victims
Tech Lifeline for Islington’s Digital Divide
More than 300 laptops and tech gadgets have been snapped up by those cut off from the web during lockdown, thanks to a heroic effort by the Met’s Central North Youth Engagement Unit. The Covid-19 crisis exposed a harsh truth: around 30% of Islington residents lacked proper IT access.
Sergeant Tony Quinn spotted the urgent need and launched a call to arms for unwanted tech. Within weeks, his appeal – backed by local charities and social media buzz – had the community donating both cash and devices in droves.
Local Heroes Join Forces in Tech Appeal
Partners like Brickworks Community Centre, Islington Giving, and Help On Your Doorstep jumped on board fast. Public figures in Islington also threw their weight behind the cause, boosting donations.
The appeal pulled in over £20,000 for new laptops plus more than 100 second-hand machines, providing much-needed digital lifelines.
Connecting Families and the Shielded
The donated laptops have been a godsend for families navigating school closures. They’re now able to access vital online lessons. The elderly and those shielding have also felt less isolated thanks to this tech boost.
Sergeant Quinn: Pride in Community Police Work
“At the start of lockdown, I spoke with local partners about how to help those hardest hit by COVID-19 restrictions,” Sergeant Quinn said. “I had an unused PC at home, which sparked the idea to rally the community for donations.”
“Thanks to our charity partners and the public’s generosity, we launched the appeal quickly and raised funds alongside second-hand donations. It’s been humbling to see the impact on young people and families needing tech support right now. I’m proud to highlight the often unseen work police do to support our communities.”
Community Centre Cheers Collaboration
Colin Adams MBE from Hanley Crouch Community Association hailed the initiative as invaluable:
“We’re truly grateful to Tony and his team for starting this campaign. It’s amazing to see how many locals gained a vital tech lifeline during tough times. It proves what partnerships can achieve.”
