Community Shaken as Beloved Essex Road Flower Seller Tony Eastlake Stabbed to Death
Tragedy struck on Saturday, 20 May, when police were called at 5.27pm to reports of an injured man on Essex Road, N1. Officers and paramedics rushed to the scene where they found 55-year-old Tony Eastlake with a stab wound.
Despite emergency efforts, Tony was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers.
Local Legend and Father Remembered for Decades of Service
Tony’s family paid tribute to the well-loved father and community figure. “Our hearts are broken forever at the loss of such a very special man,” they said. “He was loved by all in the Islington community—kind, caring, always laughing. Most importantly, a devoted dad to Lisa, Pauline, and his daughter Paige, who he adored.”
Tony ran and worked the Essex Road flower stall since he was just 14, rain or shine. “A smiling, friendly face to so many,” his family said. Hundreds have already sent messages of support.
Met Police Hunt Killer Following Violent Stabbing
The Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched a murder probe after witnesses reported Tony’s violent altercation with another man shortly before the attack.
“Tony was a well-known, loved and respected member of the community,” said Detective Chief Inspector Vicky Tunstall. “He owned the flower stall for nearly 40 years and was a pillar of Essex Road.”
DCI Tunstall urged witnesses to come forward: “If you were around Halliford Road or Ecclesbourne Road between 5.20 and 5.25pm, did you see the altercation or anyone running away?”
She also appealed for CCTV footage from homes, businesses, delivery drivers, or cars with dash cams in the area.
“Your footage could be pivotal. We’re keeping an open mind about motives and want anyone with info to contact us. Anonymity is guaranteed.”
