1,000 Police Officers to Clamp Down on London Protests This Weekend
London is bracing for a major security operation this weekend as around 1,000 police officers gear up to manage three high-profile events. The Met is focusing most resources on marches by Tommy Robinson supporters, anti-racism campaigners, and a Trans Pride rally.
Clash of Crowds: The Three Big Events
- Tommy Robinson March: Kicking off outside the Royal Courts of Justice, this march will wind its way to Trafalgar Square where a rally is planned.
- Counter-Protest by Stand Up To Racism and Allies: Starting from Russell Square, the marchers will end at Whitehall for their own rally.
- Trans Pride March: Beginning at Langham Place and concluding at Wellington Arch with speeches.
Police Set Strict Conditions to Keep Peace
Under the Public Order Act, the two protest marches face tight controls to prevent disruption. Routes and timings are strictly enforced to keep opposing groups apart.
Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove said: “This weekend sees a number of groups with opposing views assembling in central London. We are deploying a significant number of officers as part of a carefully planned operation.
“Our top priority is to keep the peace so lawful protest can happen safely. We have proactively used our powers to manage the marches and keep groups apart. Officers will act decisively against any rule breakers or criminal activity.
“Everyone has a right to feel safe in London. Those who try to intimidate others or spread hate speech will face police action. There will be a strong police presence everywhere, and anyone who feels unsafe should speak to an officer immediately.”
Road Closures and Travel Disruption Expected
To ensure public safety, several roads across Westminster will be closed, causing heavy disruptions. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use public transport or alternative routes where possible.
Maps showing the exact protest routes and road closures have been published to help Londoners navigate the weekend.
Remember: The Tommy Robinson and Stand Up To Racism marches must stick to their approved routes and finish on time. The Trans Pride event has no special restrictions but will be closely monitored.
