Two Norfolk Police Officers Die in Apparent Suicides Amid Investigations
Tragedy has struck Norfolk Police with two serving officers found dead just two weeks apart, both apparently by suicide. PC Richard Dennis, 42, was discovered in Ingoldisthorpe on June 30, and PC Martin Scott, 35, was found dead in Wymondham on July 13. Both cases were revealed during inquests held in Norwich, which have since been opened and adjourned.
Officers Under Investigation at Time of Deaths
Norfolk Police confirmed that both men were under investigation when they died. PC Dennis had been suspended over allegations of criminal misconduct, while PC Scott faced off-duty misconduct claims but remained on restricted duties.
The force expressed shock and sorrow, referring both cases to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for a full probe.
Deputy Chief Constable Speaks Out on Force Pressures
Deputy Chief Constable Simon Megicks paid tribute to the fallen officers and offered condolences to their families, friends, and colleagues. He highlighted the immense pressure police face, including intense public scrutiny and rising demands, while still having to follow strict regulations.
“We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and conduct investigations with careful attention to the wellbeing of the officers, victims, and public,” said Megicks.
He confirmed internal processes are being reviewed, and welfare support systems—such as counselling and dedicated welfare officers—are in place to help staff through tough times.
Force Committed to Support and Investigation
The deaths of PC Dennis and PC Scott underline the harsh realities and emotional strain police endure. Norfolk Police vow to continue backing their families and colleagues while prioritising officers’ welfare.
The IOPC investigation aims to shed light on what led to these heartbreaking losses.
