Soldier Goes on Deadly Rampage at Son’s Funeral in DR Congo
A soldier in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo sparked horror when he opened fire on mourners gathered for his son’s funeral. The massacre in the village of Nyakova, on Lake Albert’s shores in Ituri province, left 13 people dead — including the soldier’s wife, in-laws, and two children.
Grief Turns to Tragedy
The unnamed soldier had just returned from duty in another village when he found his family and neighbours gathered to mourn his son, who died of natural causes earlier that week. Frustrated and furious that his son was buried without his consent or presence, the soldier snapped and unleashed a deadly attack late Saturday, killing eight young people among the victims.
Manhunt Underway as Community Mourns
Village chief Baraka Muguwa Oscar explained the soldier’s rage was sparked by not being consulted over the burial. After the bloodbath, the soldier fled the scene. Congolese military search teams are now hunting him down.
Army Vows Justice Following Shocking Shooting
Lt Jules Ngongo, Ituri province army spokesperson, condemned the killing. “Taking a person’s life is unacceptable. Indiscipline like this will face the courts,” he warned. The community remains in shock, struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss of loved ones.
