Bomb scare sparks mass evacuation in Elephant and Castle

Suspicious item causes chaos at Travel Lodge

Police rushed to South London this afternoon after a “suspicious item” was found at the Travel Lodge hotel on Newington Causeway. The discovery triggered an immediate evacuation of nearby buildings around the busy Elephant and Castle junction.

Police cordons and emergency services flood the scene

Multiple police cars and cordons blocked off Gaunt Street, Southwark Bridge Road, Newington Causeway, and Elephant & Castle itself. The London Ambulance Service and Fire Brigade were also called to the scene, heightening tensions among locals and commuters.

False alarm as item declared safe

After thorough checks, officers confirmed the object was no longer suspicious. Residents and workers affected by the scare were allowed back once the all-clear was given.

“Police are evacuating buildings around an area of #ElephantAndCastle along Newington Causeway,” a witness tweeted. “There is no explanation at this time. #SE1 #Southwark.”

“Police cordons placed down Gaunt Street, Southwark Bridge Road, Newington Causeway, and Elephant & Castle,” another bystander posted. “What exactly is going on?”
