Young Mechanic Dies in Tragic Plympton Crash
A deadly collision on Boringdon Hill has claimed the life of 23-year-old Michael Cockburn-Hilton. The Plymouth local died at the scene after a two-vehicle crash at around 1.40pm on Saturday, 13 December.
Family and Loved Ones Devastated
Michael’s family are heartbroken. In a moving statement, they said: “We are devastated to share that our beloved son and brother Michael Cockburn-Hilton has died. This tragedy has left our family heartbroken beyond words, and our lives will never be the same.”
They added, “At this time, we are focusing on honouring his life and supporting one another. We ask for privacy, compassion, and understanding as we grieve and begin to process this unimaginable loss.”
His partner Hailey shared her pain: “I am shattered by this loss. No words can express how much he meant to me and how much I will miss him. The world is a darker place without his light guiding me home.”
Workmates Pay Tribute to ‘Mature and Talented’ Mechanic
At Mayflower Auto Services, where Michael worked, colleagues are in shock. Starting as a trainee, Michael quickly rose to become a licensed MOT tester, impressing everyone with his skill and professionalism.
They described him as “mature beyond his years—loyal, dedicated, hardworking and a fantastic mechanic who mentored apprentices and supported colleagues.”
Colleagues added: “Michael was more than an employee; he was our friend and family. The loss we feel is enormous—a void that will never be filled. Our deepest condolences go to his parents, sister, partner, and extended family. Michael was a credit to them all and will be forever missed beyond words.”
Police Probe Ongoing, Appeal for Witnesses
Devon and Cornwall Police are investigating the crash and urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to come forward. Witnesses can call 101 or visit the police website quoting log number 362 of 13/12/25.
Because police had prior contact related to the case, the Independent Office for Police Conduct is now carrying out an independent investigation.
