Store Boss Threatened After Foiling £84 Shop Theft
A fearless store manager faced danger after trying to stop thieves stealing from Heron Foods in Newark.
Bungling Thieves Grab £84 of Goods and Threaten Staff
Two men stormed into Heron Foods on Jersey Street and stuffed a trolley with £80 of washing detergent and a £4 bottle of wine. They then walked out without paying.
Outside in the car park, the manager confronted one of the crooks. When he grabbed the trolley, the suspect shoved him and waved the stolen bottle of wine threateningly above his head.
The thug left the trolley but kept the bottle and fled with his mate in a getaway car.
Linked Break-In Attempt Sparks Police Hunt
The drama unfolded just before 9.30am on Tuesday, 3 January 2023.
Police believe the same car was involved earlier when two men threatened a woman caught trying to break into her home on Grange Road, Newark.
Officers quickly tracked down the getaway car on Albert Street and arrested both suspects on suspicion of robbery and affray.
Police Slam Thieves and Praise Quick Action
“Thanks to the positive action taken by our officers, we made two arrests shortly after the incident was reported,” said Sergeant Barrington Goffe of Nottinghamshire Police.
“Shoplifting affects local communities and businesses seriously, but it’s even worse when staff are threatened or attacked.
“We believe this robbery is linked to the earlier attempted break-in and our enquiries continue. We won’t tolerate this behaviour and will work closely with retailers to deal with offenders robustly.”
